The 1849 European settlement ignited the Leech River gold rush and formation of Leechtown, catering to the placer mining underway on the rivers and creeks of Southcentral to Southwest Vancouver Island of British Columbia, Canada. This 158.56 acres placer mining property binds both sides of a heavily pronounced bend on the Jordan river and covers over 1000 metres per side. Located 28km W of Sooke, British Columbia, accessed by logging road N of the West Coast Hwy. (gate key required from the logging operation in the Town of Jordan River by the river mouth) or, from the logging road that runs E/W on the S side of Loss Creek. Prolific nuggets have been found in this river since the mid 1800’s. The numerous bars and black sand deposits on the high banks on the river produce gold varying from fine, near-pure flour gold to large nuggets over several ounces. The gold bearing gravels likely derive from Mount Valentine, Karmustsen formation and Leech River rocks, the latter representing a significant fault line in the area.
