 A stable area less prone to movement than the surrounding, less stable rock which become overfolded or thrust out onto it. The foreland is usually at the edge of a craton or continental part of the Earth’s crust. Foreland is also considered to be the area where a port is situated, in this context the opposite of foreland is hinterland
