Latitude 50.393650° longitude -118.935540°.

Bedrock in the area comprises volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic Nicola Group. These have been intruded by granitic rocks of the Jurassic Nelson Intrusions.

The BC Government’s Minfile summary (082LSE069) describes the site as follows: “Gravels in the vicinity of this creek are extensive. Gold is sparse in the surface slaty gravels, but is reported to be more abundant in the underlying reddish gravels of schistose and gneissic materials. The gold is heavy, well-rounded and is associated with black sand”. Gold in Putnam Creek has a fineness of 845.

In 1985, Brican Resources completed a geological and geochemical work program. Although the report did not recommend further work on the bedrock units, it acknowledged that gravels of Putnam Creek accounted for the anomalously higher values of gold. Formal geological testing of 100 kg. sand sample revealed values between 1.3 and 2.3 grams per ton gold.

The above results were confirmed by Teck Exploration (part of Teck, formerly Cominco, Teck Cominco) during a regional stream sampling program in 1999. A pan sample and prospecting program also procured samples that exceeded 1 gram per ton.
