Considering a job in Mining? Skilled careers in mining are increasingly available today, due to dramatic increases in the resource industry. Professionals are rapidly being sought to address Canada’s growth across most Provinces. This comes alongside sweeping retirements from the baby boomer generation. Canadian companies are also operating overseas with increased fervor, the overall effect is a vacuum of talent domestically. The result has companies scrambling for both skilled workers and contractors. Commodity booms can run in cycles, usually several years, directly related to the increase and decrease in the price and demand of minerals and economic confidence. On their downturn these cycles have historically displaced large numbers of workers. More recently with the increase of oil, gold and metal prices have left Canadian explorers busy expanding their mineral resources and to facilitate the production of nuclear and alternative energy, mining jobs are on the upswing. Apprenticeships in mining are thereby a rewarding and meaningful commitment.  

Mining can be a lucrative industry. The following approximations for compensation by skill in the mining industry have been collected by BCgold.com:

-Geologists for exploration or grade control make from $52,000 – $250,000/year and up

-Engineers usually make $90,000 and up, full-time

-Geophysical Technicians can make from $75,000 – $150,000 and up working for busy contractors

-Electricians can earn from about $26/hr to about $70/hr depending on their experience and certification

-Labourers can make from around $10 to $35/hr or more plus overtime

-Heavy Equipment Operators, Mining Truck Drivers and Drillers earn approx. $27/hr and up

-Heavy Equipment Mechanics usually make $45/hr to $80/hr or even more, depending on remoteness of the location. Mechanics able to repair Heavy Machinery are very in-demand.

Managers directly impact the profitability, safety and/or efficiency of their company. Management positions in mining usually offer starting salaries at $100,000 or more and normally offer benefits that may also include ownership shares in the company. Prospectors stake claims to develop new or historic mining properties, and may also be the initial discoverer of a mine. Factors affecting scale of pay in mining include experience (track record of successful projects or attempts), geography (the remoteness of the project) as well as living conditions, a candidate’s history of safety plus being a team player able to set a positive and productive tone for their team. Experience, aptitude or certification in specific technologies used in the mining industry will also play a positive role.

The majority of exploration and development companies in the minerals and resource sector are public companies. Public resource and mining companies raise money by Initial Public Offering (IPO), private placements and the sale of company shares on public financial markets like the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) Venture Exchange (TSXV) and others.
